Brazil offers three main eVisa categories to accommodate different travel purposes. Understanding which eVisa type you need is the first step in your application. This guide explains each Brazil eVisa type, who it is for, and how to choose the right one.

Tourist eVisa (VIVIS) – The Most Common
The tourist eVisa covers:
- Leisure travel, sightseeing, beach vacations
- Visiting friends and family in Brazil
- Cultural and sports events as a spectator
- Medical tourism
- Short-term non-degree courses (up to 90 days)
It does NOT allow paid employment in Brazil. For most visitors to Brazil, the tourist eVisa is the correct choice.
Business eVisa (VITEM II)
For travelers conducting professional activities without receiving payment from a Brazilian entity:
- Attending business meetings or negotiations
- Participating in trade fairs and exhibitions
- Corporate training sessions
- Journalism and media work for foreign publications
- Scientific research visits
The business eVisa does NOT authorize employment by a Brazilian company or receipt of a Brazilian salary.
Transit eVisa (VITRAX)
For travelers passing through a Brazilian airport en route to another country, especially when:
- Your connecting flight requires clearing Brazilian immigration
- You have an overnight layover in a Brazilian city
If you remain in the international transit area of a Brazilian airport without passing immigration, you may not need a transit visa – check specific airport rules.
Which eVisa Type Should I Choose?
The vast majority of travelers need the Tourist eVisa (VIVIS). Choose Business only if your primary purpose is clearly business. Choose Transit only if connecting through Brazil and exiting the airport. When in doubt, select Tourist – it is the most flexible. Misrepresenting your purpose can lead to complications at the border. See our Brazil eVisa Rejection guide.
Long-Stay Visa Types (Beyond eVisa)
For stays over 90 days, work, degree-level study, or retirement in Brazil, different visa categories apply:
- Digital Nomad Visa (VITEM XIV) – For remote workers employed outside Brazil
- Student Visa (VITEM IV) – For degree-level study
- Work Visa (VITEM V) – For employment by a Brazilian company
See our Brazil eVisa for Digital Nomads page for details on the digital nomad option.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I change my eVisa type after approval?
No. Once approved for a specific type (e.g., Tourist), you cannot change it. Submit a new application if you selected the wrong type.
Can a tourist eVisa holder attend a business meeting?
Purely incidental business activities are generally tolerated. However, if your primary purpose is business, apply for the Business eVisa to avoid potential complications at the border.
Do all eVisa types cost the same?
Yes. All Brazil eVisa types – Tourist, Business, and Transit – cost $80.90 USD.
Can digital nomads use the tourist eVisa for remote work?
Remote work for non-Brazilian employers is generally tolerated under the tourist eVisa for short stays. For legal certainty and extended stays, the dedicated digital nomad visa is the better option.
